Begin Again!, was the request from our clients. A small garden with no functionality for this family of 4 at the back of a terrace was no longer practical. In its previous state, the garden was not used at all aside from housing oversized furniture.
The garden needed to punch above its weight and deliver an area where the family could relax, cook, dine and spend time together. The challenge was to pack this all into a 32m2 space!
All of the practical requests have been accommodated including storage, an outdoor kitchen, dining and lounge area. The area is all on one level for easy family access. This deceptively simple garden has ticked all of our client’s boxes without feeling cluttered or busy.
Taking advantage of a neighbouring Phoenix Palm – its huge fronds create a dramatic feature, while the arching fronds of the tree ferns create a cool canopy above the comfortably cushioned lounge. A rich tapestry of lush plants; Gingers, Ctenanthe, Calathea, Silver Lady Fern; all combines to create a glowing tropical outlook and an ever-inviting environment to relax in or entertain. Timber is used throughout to bring natural warmth and a feeling of lightness to the design.
The built-in BBQ and space for dining deliver functionality. Garden storage cupboards double as a serving bench or bar when entertaining. Playful elements tie the garden to its history and locale.
The yellow ‘Hello’ and matching striped awning, a nod to summer days and the iconic Bondi beach not far beyond the garden walls.
The trunk of an existing palm has been painted a bright white, it acts as a highlight amongst the green and brings the garden into balance.
